Richard Wade III apparently moved from Goochland County to Bedford County in July 1777. Before moving he served a tour of duty during the Revolutionary War at Williamsburg, Virginia, and afterward he participated in the war in Kentucky.

Richard Wade, Virginia Line, S3443, soldier was born 26 October 1752 in Goochland County, Virginia and after the Revolution he lived in Madison County, Kentucky until 1801 then moved to Wayne County, KY, then moved to Cumberland County, Kentucky where he applied 12 July 1832 and was referred to as Richard Wade, Sr., 2 children were referred to as being christened by a Mr. Douglas who had also married soldier and wife (wife not named), in 1833 soldier stated he lived alternately with a grandson in Wayne County, KY and with a son-in-law in Cumberland County, Kentucky (their names were not given.)

Richard Wade was born 27 October 1752 in Goochland County, Virginia and died 7 February 1844 in Henry County, Missouri or Clinton County, Kentucky. Reports of two tombstones exist. He settled in Wayne County, KY in 1801. He later owned land on Beaver Creek, amount increasing to 400 acres in 1824.
Richard grew to manhood in Goochland County, Virginia and with the coming of the Revolutionary War he was called in March 1777 to serve under the command of Captain William Johnson and did so with activity at Williamsburg. When he returned from duty in July he moved to Bedford County, Virginia and there enlisted six months in a company under the command of Captain Charles Watkins, to guard the frontier from Indian raids. The company arrived at Boonesborough, KY on October 12, 1777. Richard was one of 29 going under the command of Daniel Boone to the Blue Licks to make salt for the Fort, and all were captured on February 8, 1778 by some 120 Indians under the leadership of Chief Blackfish. Richard Wade, along with the other were taken to the Indian town on the Miami River in present Ohio, then he and some of the others on to Detroit and finally to Montreal to spend over three years as prisoner and slave. He escaped in July 1781 and returned to Boonesboro in December 1781 by way of Boston, Fort Pitt and the Falls of the Ohio (Louisville). General George Rogers Clark interceded on his behalf immediately after his return from captivity, to prevent him being called up foradditional active duties on a trip into the Indian stronghold of Ohio. During the remaining Revolutionary War his duties were in defense of Boonesboro and in scouting parties against the Indians. During the Battle of the Blue Licks in 1783, he was one of those left to guard Fort Boonesboro, but later went with the others to assist in buring the dead.
Richard Wade continued to live at Fort Boonesboro and in Madison County, Kentucky until December 1801, when he settled on Indian Creek in Wayne County, KY, later to be included in Clinton County. Wayne County had been formed in 1800 and the land in the Cumberland River Valley was fertile and available for settling. Forty veterans of the Revolutionary War were living in Wayne County at the same time, one a Major Hancock, possibly a brother to Judith Hancock, wife of Richard Wade. Richard Wade sold 120 acres to Richard Wade Jr. on April 15, 1824 and in 1826 sold land on Indian Creek to Joel Burchett, and in 1829 sold 7 acres in Fayette County, off Hoffmans fork of Boones Creek which was adjoining Richard Wade's original claim.
Richard Wade applied for a Revolutionary War Pension in Cumberland County, Kentucky on July 12, 1833 and stated he was living with his grandson in Clinton County and son-in-law in Cumberland County. He reportedly went to Henry County, Missouri with his son and Richard Wade Jr. and died there in 1841. The Wayne County, KY records list his deach date as February 7, 1844.
Joseph was the first Wade of record in Wayne, County owning land in 1801. 1829 finds Joseph and wife, Margaret authorizing son James of Wayne County to sell their land which he did on June 4, 1829 by which time Joseph and Margaret had moved to Lawrence County, Alabama. In 1850, Margaret Wade, age 70 was living in the home of J. W. Wade, age 37.

John Wade, son of Richard and Judith Hancock Wade, is buried in the Community Cemetery at Cartwright in Clinton County, Kentucky. His tombstone contains an engraving of Fort Boonesborough and is inscribed, "Born in Boone's Fort, Ky. Sept. 22, 1781; Died Apr. 14, 1868." He died at Camp Douglas, Illinois. His wife Mary "Polly" James Wade was born on 14 April 1791, died on 03 august 1860 and is buried in Community Cemetery also.
The birth year of John Wade, 1781, may be an error, unless Judith Hancock Wade got pregnant by another man while her husbund Richard Wade was a prisoner of the British in Montreal. Richard Wade was a captive from 1778 until July 1781 when, according to his deposition, he finally escaped and go back to Kentucky about three weeks before Christmas. Given his clear recollection of the facts of his military service and captivity, it is unlike that Richard was mistaken about the year of his escape, so John probably was not born until 1782.1 |
