Note During the Civil War, Jesse L. Prothero was a disloyal. A disloyal was aperson who was not Pro-Union and had to register every year with theUnion Army and promise not to aid or abet the Confederate Military in thearea. As the Confederates moved through they took most of the goods fromthe farms, as well as the Union Army. The only difference is the UnionArmy shared their coffee, which the locals loved.

NOTE: Not able to find any other deed while in Livingston County,Missouri concerning the Prothero School I feel that this above may be thevery deed of the property for the Prothero School. It is in conflictwith the following history of the Prothero School.

Prothero School

N.E. Cor. Sec. 11.59-25, 2 miles northeast of Lilly Grove Church and onehalf mile south of Gee Creek.

The first school in the area was known as the Freel's School. Itwas a log cabin. About 1867 it was sold to Charles Rosson for 13.25. Aframe building was built about one mile north on land purchased fromCharles Rosson. This school burned in February 1898. It was rebuilt onthe same site by Clifton Prothero and others, and the name was changed toProthero School. The road was on the east side of the building.

The schoolhouse was on a concrete foundation, 18' x 24', with aconcrete porch, facing south with windows est and west. The door was inthe south end near the southwest corner. There was an arched ceiling. The fuel shed was northwest and the well was southwest of the school. There were shade trees in the yard. In 1936 two new outhouses werebuilt. Elizabeth Ann Prothero being swore says that the sum of 400 dollarsallowed by the probate court for a year's support for herself from theestate of her deceased husband Jesse L. Prothero is all together toosmall, that of the time of making her final statement of this term asadministrator of said estate she intended to apply for an additionalallowance of 300 dollars but the source was overlooked and by mistake notasked for she now therefor says the said settlement or opened and that anadditional allowance of $300 be made her for her year's support. Shesays she had several minor children aged respectively 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, 4and 21 at this time. That all but the three last are girls - That sevenhundred dollars is a very small allowance for her to support herself andher said minors -
