Related Rev Abraham Cook is a 2GGrandfather and 2GGranduncle to Charles Lowell Cook Jr.2
Note-ShackelfordHe Abraham was born of pious Baptist parents, in FranklinCounty(Pittsylvania County), Virginia, July 6th,1774. In 1780(1784) hisparents moved to the wilderness of Kentucky, and joined some half dozenfamilies in forming a settement at the Forks of Elkhorn, in what is nowFranklin County.

In June 1788, Forks of Elkhorn church was constituted and Abraham Cookwas baptized shortly afterwards and remained a member till 1796, when hemarried sarah Jones and moved to the head of Six-Mile Creek, in ShelbyCounty. Here he entered into the constitution of Six-Miles(nowChristianburg Church), in 1799. For a period of twelve years, he dividedhis time between laboring on the farm and studying the Bible. During thisperiod, he suffered many conflicts and sore temptations. He felt stronglyimpressed with the duty of preaching the gospel. But being poorlyeducated, and having a very humble opinion of his natural gifts, hestrove against the impression till his anguish almost intolerable and, atlast, he was compelled to yeild.

In 1806, a church called Indian Fork was constituted near where he lived, and he became a member of it. Here he was licensed to exercise his gift,on the fourth Saturday in December 1808, and on the fourth Sunday inSeptember, 1809, was ordained to the work of the ministry. He was nowthirth-five years of age. He was over six feet high, very straight, rather spare, dark, swarth complexion, large dark brown eyes and blackhair. He possessed a commanding and his manners, gentle, affectionate, and peruasive. His voice was clear, srong, and musical, and could he beheard at a great distance. His piety was of that sincere, frank andearnest type, that wins the respects of all, and the love of the godly.

His preaching talent was above the mediocrity of his times, and he soonbecame very popular and influential. he was chosen pastor of Indian Fork,Six-Mile, and Buffalo Lick churches, in Shelby County, and Mt. Carmel inFranklin County. Like most preachers of his times he did, in addition tohis pastoral labors, much preachiong among the destitute, and very greatsuccess attended his labors. He supported his family by his labors on thefarm, persistently refusing to receive any pay for preaching. Hecontinued to labor as pastor, with the churches that first called him, until the feebleness of old age admonished him to retire: and then leftthem all strong and prosperous.

In 1851, he sold his possessions in Kentucky, and with his wife andyoungest daughter, moved to Missouri. His daughter took sick on the way,and died, a few days after they reached their new home. Nor did he,himself, have to wait long for the Master's summons. On the 10th day ofFebruary, 1854, he passed out of the 'mud-wall cottage' and went to jointhe saints and their Redeemer in the new Jerusalem.
