Note-ShackelfordHe OLD COLONIAL JOHN

We know from official records in our possession, that this JohnShackelford lived at one time in Culpepper County, Va. Since Mordecaihis son, was born 1763 he would have been but twenty years of age whenthe war ended, and as he never married until 1788, it seems logical thatwhen he was discharged from the army and went to Pittsylvania County, that he was simply going back to his father's home. Our records show thatthere was one John Shackelford in Pittsylvania County, at one time, andthat for a time he served as sheriff. Therefore we can reasonably assumethat John Shackelford, whose wife was Anne, and who died in ShelbyCounty, Ky., 1819, was at one time a resident of Culpepper County, Va.,and at one time a resident of Pittsylvania County, Va., and possibly fora short time in Georgia. He seems to have moved to Washington County,Ky., about 1796. Four or five years later he went to Shelby County.

April 1955---The next Shackelford to appear in Pittsylvania Co. was John, who shows up there in 1777. This John had served in or under the commandof Captain Francis Kirtley and Colonel Petter Hogg, in an expeditionagainst the Indians in 1755. His service was certified August Court 1780.Order Book 4, p. 336.

This writer is of the opinion that this John was the same John that diedin Shelby County, Ky, 1819. He had a son Mordecai, who claims in hispension petition that after his Revolutionary service that he returned toPittsylvania Co. And we know that he was a son of John, as he so states.
