Temperance Ann Utley Birth and death years are from two sources:
1) A letter from Mrs. Leah Stanley Royal to Orus Reid Coffield, Jr dated May 6, 1973.
2) An article in a Raleigh, N.C. newspaper written by William A. Betts, son of Rev. Alexander D. Betts,
dated July 4, 1920.
Note that Temperance gave her age in the 1850 and 1860 NC censuses as 50 and 61, respectively. This would indicate she was born around 1800. Since the 1850 census was done in August and the 1860 census was done in July, she could not have gotten 11 years older between the two censuses. This and other sources indicate she may have been lying about her age.²
