Note Clever Frederick Hoffman and the Pony He Won

Boys are notoriously fond of and anxious to posses ponies of their own. Most of them depend upon the lavish and unrequited generosity of fond parents to furnish them with their hearts' desire. Not many ofthem earn them.
An exception to this rule is Frederick Hoffman Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Hoffman, 4960 Columbia avenue, St. Louis. Young Frederickis a pupil at St. Aloysius' Parochial School. He wanted a pony badly,as most boys of his age, 12 years and 6 months, do. So he said to hisfather:
'I can win a scholarship worth $500 in St. Louis University. If I do so and save you that much money on my education, will you lay out part of it on a pony, harness and trap for me?'
'You are on, son,' said Mr. Hoffman, who is of few words and muchperformance.
Young Frederick set about making good. He found almost insuperable obstaccles in the way. But he triumphed.
First of all he ascertained that he was too young to try for the scolarhips [sic]. The conditions of their gift confinne them to boys of from 14 to 16 years. Undeterred, the boy went to Archbishop Glennonand secured a special dispensation permitting him to try.
His teacher, the Sister Coelstine, coached him for the examination. He secured first place among boys from 2 to four years older than he is, passed in flying colors [sic]. In fact he from the parochial schoolsof Missouri and Illinois [sic]. Five scholarships were offered. YoungHoffman took the first which entitles him to the full academic and collegiate course at St. Louis University. The winner of the other prizes receive but three years academic course.
Not only did this boy win first prize he also made the wonderfulaverage of 93.33 for his entire examination.
Now he has his pony and his father is some hundreds of dollars in thepocket thereby. Young Frederick drives the pony about and sings 'Everybody works for my old man.'

Hello Carolyn,
I have good news and also bad news. First the good news:
Friedrich Julius HOFMANN (one 'f'') is listed in the Hessen-DarmstadtArchives as having emigrated in 1852. His last residence is given as'Fuerfeld / Fürfeld'. There is also a note attached that says he wasto be conscripted in 1853/54.

Now to the bad news: there are 2 towns by that name, one is located inRheinpreussen (Rhine-Prussia), the other is in Baden-Wuerttemberg.
I would follow Robert T's suggestion and check the parish records inMacomb....probably Evangelical-Lutheran Church, for the marriage andpossibly his death, for any additional info regarding his place ofbirth. Of course there is always the chance that the town name wasmisspelled. I have found a couple of Frederick Hofmann/Hoffmann whoemigrated at age 18, which would have been his age, but without thename of the town it's hard to tell whether he's one of them.
PS: the church records in Macomb are probably written in German. Ifyou find him, make a copy of the page and send it to me fortranslation (email).
Best wishes
Ursula from Michigan

Hello Carolyn,
Sorry for the delayed response...in the meantime I have been toGermany (Berlin) and back and was swamped with emails requiring myattention.

I have translated the Baptismal Records but HORRORS....the pastorforgot to list the name of the child's father!!! What you've beenreading was not Heinrich but Friedrich...the name of the child. Iwould suggest checking a few years forward and backward in order tosee if there were other children born to this couple so that we canget the name of the father.

Usually the parents chose their own siblings as witnesses duringbaptism and I have a hunch that Philip SCHUELE was a brother ofKatharina HOFFMANN nee Schuele, and Julianne HOFFMANN was the sisterof ....blank Hoffmann, whose name is not listed on the baptismalrecord.

Keep searching..sooner or later you'll hot paydirt.

Best wishes,
Ursula

BAPTISMAL RECORD
1824
No.
715     Friedrich Julius HOFFMANN
born on 7 August 1824 here in Fürfeld to the local citizen, residentand master saddler [father’s name should have been here!] by his wifeKatharina a born SCHUELE from Gut-Grossweiler (?)., a son, who wasbaptized on the 12th of the same month in the name of: FriedrichJulius.

Witnesses:
1.     Philip SCHUELE, legitimate, unmarried son of Friedrich SCHUELE,citizen, resident and carpenter from Wennsweiler (?) and his wife, aborn SCHEIDT from Münsterappel;
2.     Julianne HOFFMANN, legitimate, unmarried daughter of the latePhilip Wilhelm HOFFMANN, a former citizen, resident and master saddlerfrom Weissenheim (?) and his wife, the late Anna Barbara, a bornDITTMAR from Obernheim [now Obernheim-Kirchenarnbach]

------------------------
Translator’s notes:

The name of the child’s father was omitted!

1)     Gut-Grossweiler: Gut = Estate; it’s not clear whether this was thename of an estate on which Katharina SCHUELE was born or if it was atown. I checked the Gazetteer and could not find a town by that name.Perhaps it’s more clearly written on another birth certificate.

2)     Wennsweiler; Again, very difficult to read; there are a myriad ofdifferent spellings that could be derived from the handwritten entry.I couldn’t find a town by that name in the near vicinity. There aremany towns ending in ....weiler;

3)     Weissenheim: This too, possibly misread; I couldn’t find a town bythat name in the near vicinity. Perhaps other records show a betterversion of the town.
