A native of Hatton, born August 30, 1898, he was a son of the late Mrs.Sally Sheets Stigers and John Stigers. Stigers was a member of the Mt. Zion Christian Church. Survivors, along with his wife, are daughter, Annabelle Ernst, and son,Ray Stigers, both of Louisville; two sisters, Mrs. Della Moore of ShelbyCounty and Mrs. Viola Haydon of Franklin County; one half brother, LutherStigers, of Franklin County; one grandson; one granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. The body is at the Harrod Bros. Funeral Home where a service will be onMonday, at 2 p.m. The Rev. John C. Chenault, pastor of the FirstChristian Church will officiate. Burial will follow in the Mt. ZionCemetery. Clarence Foster, Lawrence Harrod, Jim Raymond, J. R. Sudduth, and BubKenneth Stigers will serve as bearers. Published in The State Journal on June 21, 1964.1 |

That was when I learnedthat John loved to play the fiddle. John lived next to his brother Benjamin which also owned a big piece a ofland in Franklin County, Kentucky. From family lore Ben and John fought alot and even got rough at times. After John's first wife GeorgAnn died he married Lillie Cook, White. Theylived in Hatton for a while but then John and Lillie decided to move on,so they signed the land over to John children from his first marriage.This happen in April of 1917. John is buried with his first wife GeorgAnn in Benson Baptist Church inFranklin County, Kentucky. John was known for sitting out on the front porch and play the fiddle,and doing a little jig. Valerie found her that way when she went to her house to check up on her. She was taken to Caritas Hosp. and diagnosed as having had a heart attack. When the fever and nauseau wouldn't go away after days, Valerie insisted on the Dr. running a special blood test to look for the deadly virus, West Nile that was in the State of Ky. The report came back as positive for the virus. Antiobiotics and fluids were already being given so treatment continued while her diagnosis was sent to the CDC. Not eating or regaining strength for weeks, she continued to loose weight
In the last week of Sept. the day before she died, Valerie took her a KFC dinner and a strawberry dessert and Annabelle did eat some and said she liked the taste of the dessert. She seemed to be better. They were to take her to a rehab residence to build up her strength to walk again and Valerie had taken her clothes to be moved there on that evening of Sept.27th, Friday. The next day while Annabell's oldest grandson was visiting her, she had a massive heart attack and died from it. As per her wishes, Annabelle had no visitation at a funeral home and was taken to her family's burial grounds in Franklin Co., the Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Note from Annabelle's dau, Valerie:
My mother figured that she was bitten sometime between 3:00 and 4:30 onthe hot afternoon of August 15 when she fell in her backyard and could not get up. That's when she fractured her knee. That is not the time of day the media warns us about!
