ORPHAN BRIGADE--COMPANY A, FIFTH REGIMENT

JAMES A. SHACKELFORD, FRANKLIN COUNTY, FOUGHT AT PERRYVILLE ANDCHICKAMAUGA.
(FROM 'HISTORY OF THE ORPHAN BRIGADE', BY ED PORTER THOMPSON, ENTERED,ACCORDING TO ACT OF CONGRESS, IN THE YEAR 1898, BY LEWIS N. THOMPSON, INTHE OFFICE OF THE LIBRARIAN OF CONGRESS, AT WASHINGTON). PAGE 698.

Before the battle of Chickamauga, and while the Fifth Kentucky belongedto Kelley's Brigade, the men of the other Kentucky regiments occasionallysaw it, and had their flings at what they considered a newer and lessexperienced organization. There were jokes about their hurtingthemselves with army rifles and bayonets: they were squirrel hunters, butternuts, etc. and as most of them were from the mountain sectionswhere ginseng at one time constituted a sort of staple of barter, theywere dubbed Sand Diggers. After Chickamauga, however, where the FifthRegiment, officers and men, behaved like heroes of a hundred fights, theveterans gladly welcomed them as members of the brigade, and took theminto full fellowship--- the regiment being now transferred from Kelleyto Lewis. Most of them had really seen much service: but Chickamauga wasto them as to the major whom Col. McDowell momentarily checked, 'thebiggest wood-chopping they had ever been at,' and here they provedthemselves to be as the best. The term Sand Digger, however, stuck, because it seemed to strike the brave fellows themselves as being a goodsort of designation: and to this day the survivors recognize it as theirown. They made it be an honorable title.

**When the battle of Perryville was fought, James' wife, Margaret gotword that he was wounded. She boarded a train in Shelby Co., Ky. andwent to Perryville the next day. Unheard of then and dangerous too.!!She arrived and saw the wounded, dead and dying but James' group hadpulled out and were no longer there. She didn't get to see him but cameback and gave accounts of the injured and dead. Her accounts were nowhere near the numbers given today. It seems to grow from year to year.Pat, her Mom and Dad went to Perryville every summer when she was growingup. Her Dad knew every battle, leader, outcome, date, etc. He read allthe time. His love and passions were locomotive trains, WW1 and the CivilWar.**

---------------------------------------------------------
Why the name 'Orphan Brigade?'

The name 'Orphan Brigade' was apparently a post-war invention by theveterans. It may have been in limited use by the end of the war, but itwas not a widespread name like 'Stonewall Brigade.' During the war, theOrphan Brigade was generally known as the Kentucky Brigade, or the FirstKentucky Brigade. There have been two theories put forward as to thesource of the name, both are probably partly correct.

Following the Orphans' disastrous assault at Murfreesboro on 2 January1863, in which they suffered devastating casualties from massed Federalartillery, Gen. Breckinridge rode along their lines. Distraught at theobvious high casualties, he cried out, 'My poor Orphan Brigade! They havecut it to pieces!' ('E.P. Thompson,' Confederate Veteran, Vol. 4, No. 11,November 1896, p. 368). In this battle, the Brigade commander, Gen. RogerHanson, was mortally wounded. The Kentuckians again lost their commander,Gen. Ben Hardin Helm, at Chickamauga, further contributing to theirfeeling of being 'orphaned.'

Another possible source for the name was the general situation faced bythe Kentucky Confederates. When they left the state in February 1862,they were never able to return as a unit during the war. Cut off fromsupplies, recruits, and even mail from their homes behind enemy lines, the Kentuckians began to see themselves as 'orphans' whose only home wasthe Confederate Army (Thompson (1898), p. 29).

The '9th Kentucky Infantry' led by Col. Thomas Hunt's regiment. whenorganized in 1861, was known as the '5th Kentucky', and it is so-calledin many period records. However, another regiment in Eastern Kentucky hadalso formed as the 5th Kentucky; since this regiment had perfected itsorganization first, the Confederate War Department redesignated Hunt'sregiment as the 9th Kentucky in October 1862.

A brief history the Sixth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Union)
The Sixth Kentucky was organized in late 1861 and seven of its tencompanies were mustered into Federal Service on December 24, 1861 at CampSigel in Louisville. Two of its companies were mustered into FederalService at Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, IN, on September 9, 1861, andthe other company was mustered in at Shepardsville, KY on November 1,1861. Its volunteers came principally from Henry, Jefferson, Kenton,Oldham, and Shelby counties. Anderson, Campbell, Fayette, Hardin,Madison, Spencer, Trimble, and Woodford counties were also represented. In addition, there were about 60 men from southern Indiana in theregiment. Four of the Sixth Kentucky's ten companies were composedprincipally of German-born residents of Louisville.

Walter C. Whitaker of Shelbyville, KY, a lawyer and State Senator, wasthe Sixth's first colonel. He was promoted to brigadier general in July,1863. Whitaker was succeeded as colonel of the regiment by George T.Shackelford of Richmond, KY. After Colonel Shackelford was wounded in thebattle of Chickamauga in September, 1863, Walter C. Whitaker's youngerbrother, Major Richard T. Whitaker commanded the regiment. Major Whitakerresigned his commission in May, 1864 and Capt. Isaac N. Johnston of HenryCounty led the regiment through the Atlanta Campaign.

The Sixth Kentucky was a member of Colonel (later Brigadier General)William B. Hazen's brigade. Hazen's brigade served in the Army of theOhio and its successor, the Army of the Cumberland.

The Sixth Kentucky fought at Shiloh, Stones River, Chickamauga, Brown'sFerry, Orchard Knob, Missionary Ridge, and in the four-month-long AtlantaCampaign.

The Sixth Kentucky was at Perryville on the day of the battle, but itsdivision was not called into the fray. However, the Sixth was in thevanguard of the Union Forces that pursued the Confederate forces until itwas certain that they were leaving Kentucky. During this time, there werefrequent skirmishes with Braxton Bragg's rear guard.

The survivors of the three years of heavy service were mustered out inlate 1864. About forty men re-enlisted and were assigned to the FourthKentucky Mounted Infantry Regiment for the duration of the war.

Over 110 of its men were killed or mortally wounded. Many others werewounded and disabled for life. Almost 90 died from disease and illnesses, and many were disabled by these causes. By the end of the regiment'sthree years of service, its rolls had been reduced from approximately 900men to about 300.2
