'From Missouri the Prothero Family came to Sacramento (Sutter's Fort)because Paulina Prothero Packwood and her husband Elisha had alreadysettled there in 1846. They did quite well during the Gold Rush becausethey were here early. In the fall of 1849 they left for Missouri to buycattle -- cattle were worth more than gold -- and my guess is that thefamily (Sam, Joseph, etc.) helped bring the cattle west and that's howeveryone got here at the same time...1'
