Pittsylvania County, Virginia, Deed Book 2, Page 352-53-54 (abstracted)
This indenture made this twenty-fifth day of November one thousand seven hundred and seventy-one, between Thomas Hardy of the Parrish of Camden in Pittsylvania County
of the one part and David Wade of the same Parrish and county of the other part.
Witnesseth that the said Thomas Hardy for and in consideration of the sum of five pounds current money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the said David Wade, the receipt whereof he doth hereby convey and acknowledge and for the Love and Affection the said Thomas Hardy doth bear to his daughter Agness, the wife of the above said David Wade, hath granted, bargained, and confirmed, and the said Thomas Hardy ……….. and containing 100 acres …………

David Wade, enlisted to fight in the Revolutionary War as a private in Captain Peter Bernard's Company and also in Captain John McEleney's Company of the 2nd Virginia State Regiment, commanded by Colonel Gregory Smith. He was at Valley Forge in 1778, and when the regiment pulled out he was left behind because of sickness. He did not catch up with them at Bruswick nor at White Plains. finally he recuperated and rejoined the company, only to get sick again and have to be left behind at Morice Town. He was not mustered out of service until after November 1779.

In 1782, he received a land grant in Sullivan County, Tennessee and according to the Easley Memoirs, he moved there with the rest of the Wade clan.

It has not been determined if he went to Georgia with them, but if he did he did not stay long, as he is listed in the 1790 census of Pendleton District, South Carolina with his wife, six sons and four daughters. He had no slaves at this time.

In November of 1791 he traveled to Greene County, Georgia to be co-administrator of his father's estate. At the public sale he purchases 5 pewter plates, a saw and chissell, a log chain, a beehive, 5 barrels of corn and a trunk. But the most important thing he buys is three Negro slaves named Milly, Winney and Hannah.

In 1791, David and Agnes acquire some of Thomas Burford's land. On September 3, 1792, David is granted some land in Pendleton District, South Carolina. Then on November 8, 1800, David and Agnes begin disposing of some of their land. The Thomas Burford tract they sell to their son, Thomas Clement Wade. Then the four of them sell this land to Elisha Bennett and some of the land in this vicinity goes to David Wade, Jr.

The 1800 census of Pendleton District, South Carolina, finds David Wade and family still living there and their neighbors are the Burfords, Bennetts, Nolands and their sons, Edward, Thomas and David Wade, Jr. and families.

In 1801, David and Agnes, along with Thomas and Mary Wade, again sell some land to Elisha Bennett.

Note The historic Wade Plantation was established in 1823 by a Methodist preacher, the Reverend Peyton Lisby Wade. Originally founded by Samuel Maner in 1812, the plantation began as 2,523 acres located on the Savannah River in Screven County and was known then as Lebanon Forest due to the abundance of Lebanon Cedar trees in the area. After his death in 1816, Maner's widow married Reverend Wade who then became master of the plantation.
In 1827, the Reverend Wade donated 2 3/4 acres of land on which to build a Methodist Church. The "Bethel Brick Church," the oldest Methodist church in Screven County, is still holding services today.
By 1886, Reverend Wade and Elizabeth had acquired 10,000 acres. When the reverend died in 1886, he left everything to his wife and eleven children. Jesse Wade, the seventh child, would end up owning the plantation. He was commonly known as Captain Jesse Wade in Screven County due to his rank inthe local militia. The family home, built in 1884 with lumber from the plantation, is still used.
Cotton was the main crop with the plantation having its own cotton gin, saw mill, meal grinding mill, fertilizer plant and a local store. Captain Jesse Wade constructed his own railroad eight miles long to transport his cotton to the river where it was picked up by steamboats and carried to Savannah.
Wade Plantation has grown from 10,000 acres to over 18,000 acres today. The plantation has over 12,000 pecan trees, covering 800 acres with pecans being sold by mail order, as well as wholesale and retail. They also grow corn, soybeans, wheat and other crops. The plantation is no longer in our family, sad to say, but we are very grateful that William S. Morris III of Augusta has kept the plantation alive and its history preserved. You can even order pecans today from the Wade Plantation.1
