Note Wade Ancestors and Related Families, Published 1973 by Mrs. Jeff Wade, Jr.
This following information was taken from above publication by Ophelia Wade, wife of Jeff Wade, Jr.

Thomas Burford enlisted in the American troops in the Revolutionary War and was appointed Adjutant on January 12, 1778. He fought from February 1778 to September 1779 with the 14th Virginia Regiment being commanded by Colonel Charles Lewis and then by Colonel William Davies, being at Valley Forge in May 1778. On September 9, 1778, he was commissioned a Liutenant and on July 1, 1779, he was made a Quartermaster and served iin the subsistence department. In August 1779, he served with Captain John Overton's Company, 10th Virginia Regiment on Foot, again commanded by Colonel William Davies. He is at Morristown in December 1779 and had moved on to Philadelphia by January 1780. On August 7, 1783, he received 304 pounds, 10 shillings, 11 pence for the balance of his full pay for his military service. He was a lame man, and it is believed that htis was caused from an injury during the war.

On June 5, 1786, the governor gave Thomas for his military service, two tracts of land on Broadway Creek in Pendleton District, South Carolina recorded in Grant Book NNNN, Page 207 and in Grand Book DDDD, page 44. Also on 4 December 1786, he was granted land on Broadway Creek of Rocky River.

On the 21st of May 1791, Thomas and Mary sell 350 acres of land "on the branches of Broadway Creek above the ancient boundary line as will appear by the original granted to David Wade by deed from Thomas and Mary Burford bearing datr of 14th December 1786." This deed was witnessed by Thomas Clement Wade and Thirod Nowland and recorded in Deed Book A, Page 410.

On 19 November 1791, Thomas Burford bought items at the sale of Edward Wade in Greene County, Georgia. He purchased a Negro man named Bob.

On the 12th of March 1800, Thomas and Mary sell 200 acres on Broadway Creek to James Gilliland. It is described as being part of two tracts of land granted to Thomas, 4 June 1786, Deed Book E, Page 231, Anderson, South Carolina

Between 1817 and 1820, Thomas and his family leave South Carolina and go to Georgia. He had been in Georgia before when he attended the sale of Edward Wade in 1791. Now he and all his family move, probably in a caravan, to the south.

In the 1827 Land Lottery of Georgia, Thomas drew land for his Revolutionary War service, in the Yagles District of Hall County. This land or adjacent property in Hall County is where he lived the rest of his life.

In 1829, on the 13th of August, he looses his lifelong companion of fifty-two years, as his wife Mary who was born 17 March 1761 in Halifax County, Virginia passes away at the age of 68 years. She is buried in the family plot on the farm that later came into possession of Littleberry Hutchins, the son-in-law.

On the 20th of May 1836, he made his will. This tiller of the soil, lame from the war duty, has realized that his days of cultivating crops was almost over. But he continued, with the help of his slaves, to work his soil under the brimming hot sun, until his very death, because when they had his sale some crops that were still in the earth were sold.

He died 26 September 1838 at the age of 88 years and was buried beside his wife on the family burial ground.

In 1956 when the U. S. Government was buying land for creation of Lake Sidney Lanier, the property where Thomas and Mary Burford and where Littleberry and Sarah P. Hutchins was interred was involved. The nearest of kin of each of these four - Miss Ozie Hutchins, Atlanta, Georgia - was located and permission obtained to re-locate the graves. Fifty-one grave were removed. The original tombstones for these four and the iron fence that was around their graves was removed to the New Bethany Church, about two miles off U. S. Highway 23 between Buford and Flowery Brance, Georgia. This took place on Monday, February 20, 1956.
