| Note | | Phillip Wade, a shoemaker and blacksmith, constantly on the move from Georgia, across Alabama, into several places in Mississippi before finally settling in Chickasaw County and living there his last twenty-five years. So much of his life is hidden from us because of the lack of diaries, Bible records and courthouse data, but I have found other documents to help compile his history.
In the community where the Wade's settled was a young girl, only a few years younger than Phillip, named Catharine Moore. Everyone called her "Kate" including her parents, John and Patsy Moore, who adored their oldest daughter. Soon Phillip and Catharine married and settled down in their own household. Father-in-law John was very likely a shoemaker and he probably taught Phillip this trade.
Phillip Wade and Catharine Moore were married 21st day of November 1822 by Jesse Dobbs, J. P., Hall County, Georgia, Book A, Page 8.
It wasn't long until Phillip and Catharine began having a family, and they started the practice of naming all of them with family names. By 1830 they have four small children; Martha Ann, William H., Charity and Thomas Andrew Jackson, and are living in Hall County, Georgia. By 1840 they have added four more boys to the family; James Madison/Matthew, a set of twins; David Whidden, John Richard and Peter E. They have now moved westward into Pickens County, Alabama, leaving most of their Wade kinfolks behind, but taking the John Moore family with them. One more daughter, Melissa is born to them before they move to Mississippi around 1843 after hearing of the rich Chickasaw lands. They settle in Monroe County and begin farming the flat, rich, prairie-type soil.
The oldest daughter Martha is squired by a young gentleman named William Gilliam and soon they are married and they present Phillip with his first grandson and granddaughter in quick succession.
Then Phillip and Kate have their tenth child, a little girl they name Nancy. It has taken them twenty-five years to complete their family. William decided to marry his girlfriend, Frences Elizabeth King and the family now really begins to grow. Phillip becomes the family patriarch, being the forerunner of this Wade family in Mississippi.
Phillip decides he prefers to farm in the rolling, hilly land and by 1850 his family, again with all the kith and kin, have moved to Tippah County, Mississippi. He buys two tracts of land and pays for it in just five years, in time to sell it and move again.
Sadness prevails upon the family now, as John and Patsy Moore are taken from their midst. the old couple have had faith in the son-in-law, and have followed him in his every move.
The family begins to divide when Phillip decides to go southward near Okolona, Buena Vista and Egypt Station in Chickasaw County. Andy has married and he decides to stay with his wife's people. Charity perfers not to move either. when the census enumerator visited Phillip's house in 1860 in Chickasaw County, he found only Phillip, Kate and the two younger girls. Peter had taken a job over at Palo Alto as an overseer on a farm. The others were all married.
The Civil War breaks out and Phillip, being a blacksmith and shoemaker is badly needed. He joins the 6th Mississippi Calvary, Company F and serves as a Sergeant. Toward the end of the war he is taken prisoner. It is very likely that the old gentleman, being in his sixties, was treated kindly. he was probably call "Grandpa" by the other soldiers.
Between 1860 and 1870, Phillip and Kate's children are called to leave this earth and the stench of death from the War has fallen upon this family.
Then in the spring of 1870, Phillip must bear the grief of parting with his wife of forty-seven years. He appears on the 1870 census of Chickasaw County, living alone and the emptiness of his house seems to resound from the enumerator's pencil.
Phillip has aged with they years and he decides to set his affairs in order, so in 1872 he sells his home and moves in with his children, probably thinking that his life is about over. But this old man, probably bent with age and rheumatic fingers has misguessed his departing date from this world. It is through the cheerfulness and happiness of his children and grandchildren that shares their goods with him that he finds comfort in his declining years. Sometime after 1880, when he is living with his baby daughter Nancy and her husband Thomas Ward, he leaves this world to join his wife and children that have preceeded him in death.
