James M Wade1
Male, #31341, b. about 1833
Birth | about 1833 | James was born about 1833 in Hall County, Georgia .1 |
Death - no info | | I have no information on the date and place of James M's death. |
Note | | James is living at home with his parents in the 1850 census of Tippah County, Mississippi and is listed as James M. In Miss Bert Wade's history of 1918, he is listed as James Madison. Then in Paul Wade's history he is reffered to as Matthew. So we really don't know his exact name.
The newspaper at Aberdeen, Mississippi used to run a colum call "Mother Monroe" compiled by Dr. W. A. Evans. In one column mention is made of J. M. Wade, J. R. Wade and P. E. Wade all as privates in the 43rd Regiment Mississippi Infantry, Company F, Confederate States of America. It is believed that these three Wade boys were James Madison/Matthew, John Richard and Peter E. No military record could be found for James M., although records were found for John and Peter.
There is a marriage record on file at the Tippah County, Mississippi courthouse for Madison Wait and Martha Eastep, 19 March 1867. Could this be James M. Wade?
Ophelia Wade was unable to find James M. in the 1860, 1870 or 1880 census, not only in Mississippi, but in any and all states where she has delved into records.
Two C. S. A. military records for James Wade. James Wade, 48th Regiment Mississippi Infantry, enlisted May 14, 1861 at Jackson, Mississippi, Killed September 13, 1864. James Wade, 7th Battalion Mississippi Infantry, enlisted May 12, 1862 at Quitman, Mississippi. Prisoner at Vicksburg.

Note | | David and his family lived on a plantation of about 1,000 acres in Mississippi, where cotton and corn were the main crops. There was about 14 houses on this farm and the tenants and farm workers lived in these houses. David was the manager of the plantation. This was about 15-20 miles from Buena Vista, 12 miles from Aberdeen and the closes post office was a small place called Egypt.
John David, son of David W. Wade, was about 8 years old, his family moved from this place in Mississippi to Texas by train. There were ten people in the family at that time, eight children (4 sisters, 2 brothers, 1 half sister, 1 half brother) and the parents. This was around 1890 and they moved to Ike Davis' farm near Pecan Gap, Texas. But David had "itchy feet" and moved six times around in that area; he seemed to want to move on about once a year.
When John David was about 15 years old, the family moved to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma), traveling there by covered wagon. There were three wagons for the family. In getting there John drove one of the temas most of the time. A Negro family lived near the Wade on the farm near Cooper, Texas and one of their children, a big fellow, asked to go along and drive one of the wagons for the trip, in exchange for his meals. So he and Jim Wade, David's half-brother, drove one wagon and David W. and Hugh drove the third wagon.
The trip from Cooper, Texas to Tishomingo took about six weeks. It was winter time. The group stopped at a place on Blue River for about three weeks. They stayed in two tents kept warm by a big fire between, the warmth going into the tents through the front flaps. The snow was deep. While so camped, John and the other boys enjoyed squirrel hunting in the river bottom. The young Negro man met some mixed-breeds (half Negro, half Indian) and was frightened by their language and actions and asked to be allowed to return home and his request was granted.
When the family got to Tishomingo, they settled east of twon, later moving to the Camp Ranch north of town and then on Govenor Harris' land where they lived for a short time. After David's wife died, he then constantly moved, living with first one child then the other.
David Whidden Wade enlisted in Company H, 23rd Mississippi Infantry, C.S.A. as a private, being promoted to Sergeant later. His military and pension record are in the documentary, along with excerpts from his diary that he kept during the war.
Earl Stovall and Elma Cogdill supplied Ophelia Wade with birth dates from an old family Bible.1 |

Following story by Ophelia Wade: When my husband and I were dating, we were in memphis one Sunday and he pointed out the statue of General Nathan Bedford Forrest, which is in Forrest Park. He told me that the horse upon which General Forrest sat came from the Wade plantation in Mississippi. The story goes that General Forrest's horse was shot out from under him and that John Richard Wade dismounted and gave the General his horse. After the war, General Forrest is supposed to have looked up John Richard and tried to pay him for the horse because he wanted to use it as a family carriage horse. John R. would take no pay, whereupon General Forrest told him he had a wagonload of things outside and come take his choice of the items. John Richard took a Bible and said that would be sufficient. When I started my husband's family tree, I wrote to Mississippi for the Wade family data from that Bible. It was sent to me and the printing date of the Bible was 1883. I researched General Forrest and found that he died in 1877, so I began to discount this "horse story" as folklore and untrue. Next, she discovered the Civil War record of John R. Wade and found that he was in the infantry. Now his father, Phillip R. Wade, although he was 64 years old, did serve in the Cavalry. Phillip was a shoemaker and balcksmith, so his services were extremely needed. I did not pursue this story, but set it aside and instructed my husband not to tell his father of the falicy of it, because there was no use in distrubing his father. Then about eighteen months later, Myrtle Barton wrote that Charley Ferguson had an old Bible that had lots of our Wade and King family data in it. She asked would I be interested. Indeed, I was and since my father-in-law was going to Mississippi on a visit, I instructed him to take the Bible to the courthouse and xerox the data from it. He did exactly as asked and when he came home, I just couldn't believe what that Bible data had done for our family tree. I had given birth dates back to 1809, with the latest entry in it being 1895. But most of the entries were made in the 1860's and 1870's. My King and Wade family lines were now beginning to come alive as a result of this. The printing date of the Bible was 1859. (This bible record is printed int he King chapter.) I had already retired for the night when it struck me that this bible, this 1859 Bible, was the one that John Richard took in lieu of the horse he gave to General Forrest. At last, the "folklore" story had come true. The horse was named King Phillip. John R. named the horse thusly because his wife was Sarah Catharine "King" and his father was "Phillip" Wade. To add authenticity to this story, I have just learned that General Forrest settled in Aberdeen, Mississippi after the war, but became discouraged with his business affairs there, and subsequently moved to Memphis. This places him immediately after the war only about twenty miles from where John R. lived. On one of my trips to Memphis to visit with Miss Bert Wade, she took me to her studio to show me the painting she was doing. Was I supprised to see her doing a reproduction of the portrait of General Forrest as originally painted by Nicola Marschall. She had been commissioned by Representative Edward F. Williams III of Memphis to do the work. Although there are skeptics who still doubt this story, I honestly believe that John Ricard Wade did indeed give his horse, King Phillip, to General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Now exactly what horse the sculpter used in the statue in Forrest Park, I do not know. So much for the horse story.
Following story as remembered by Mrs. Marlin Wade Carty, age 71, on August 25, 1972 about John Richard Wade:
My grandfather, John Richard Wade was 64 years of age when I was born and from the time I first remember him, I knew him as a very old man with snowy white hair, mustache and long white beard. He was a large man whose weight was about 250 pounds and about 5 feet 10 inches tall. He wore a size 7 shoe and walked with a can made of hickory (we still have the cane and my father, Thomas Edward Wade used it in his last years). They lived in Chickasaw County, Mississippi in the community of Sparta. When my father (at that time the youngest child) was small, they moved to Colfax county (now Clay County) to the Palo Alto community and then to the Hebron community. From there my Grandparents bought a small hill farm in Webster County north of Maben, Mississippi. On this farm, there was a mineral well with a cylinder bucket and chaing. This well was analyzed in Washington, D.C. by E. R. Runyan, U. S. Chemistry Division of the Agriculture Department. Qualitative analysis of white powder from this well showed; magnesium sulphate (large quantity), small quantities of iron, chlorine, calcium and sodium. This analysis was run around 1900 or earlier. People came from miles away and bought the water for medical purposes; they also came from other states and would room and board with them in the summer to drink the water. There was another of the same type well, but it was pure enough to use for regular purposes. On the front porch was a long shelf with water buckets, a wash basin and towels hanging from a nail. These buckets were always filled fresh for the night. Grandpa washed taht snowy white hair and beard there every morning, breaking the ice to do so in the winter time, then comb the icicles from it by the fire. My Grandparents were devout Baptist and every Sunday "Ole Yellow" (the horse) and buggy carried them to church. He drew a small pension from his Civil War record and together witht he small farm they were called 'good livers'. There were always country cured hams, bacon and sausage hanging and molasses in the barrel in the smokehouse. They cooked their food in an outside ketchen with a dirt floor, one side of which was always stacked with dry stove wood; but food was also cooked in iron ovens on the fireplace, such as potatoes, breads, vegetables and cobbler fruit pies. Pine knots burned int he fireplace for light to talk and study by. The yard with hand split picket fence was a rose garden. Ivy vines and other flowers made it a place of beauty. After my Grandmothers death in 1909, my father and mother moved in with him and we lived there two years. He then broke up his home and lived with his children, mostly with Tom and Annie, my father and mother. He arose every morning at 4:00 a.m. and let no one sleep any more. He was a 'big eater'. Breakfast meant ham, bacon or sausage, about six eggs and six to eight hot biscuits with coffee and a glass of sweet milk. He would say, 'Annie cooks so good' that he just could not resist over eating. During the two years we lived with Grandpa, his twin borhter, Uncle Dave from Oklahoma, along with a son Willie about my age, visisted us for about a month each summer. Uncle Dave was a small man and one could hear him talk for a great distance. He and Grandpa would argue a lot, but I do not remember them ever getting mad over the argument. Willie and I fought a lot and loved every minute of it. My Grandfather was a great old man; only wish I could have realized how great during those years that I knew him.
John Richard and Sarah Catherine can be located in the 1860 and 1870 Chickasaw County census and the 1880 census of Clay County, Mississippi
John Richard or "Big Pa" as he was fondly called by his grandchildren, died 23 June 1921 at Pheba, Mississippi and is buried beside his wife. Both have tombstones. His inscription reads: "Thou art gone from a world of care, The blessings of heaven to share."
His pension application, September 3, 1900 - Approved J. R. Peter E Wade1
Male, #31344, b. April 8, 1837, d. May 6, 1867
Birth | April 8, 1837 | Peter was born April 8, 1837 in Pickens County, Alabama .1 |
Marriage | October 5, 1860 | He married Elizabeth A Hudson, daughter of William Hudson and Nancy (surname not known), October 5, 1860 in Chickasaw County, Mississippi .1 |
Birth of Daughter | November 6, 1861 | His daughter Mary was born on November 6, 1861 in Amory, Monroe County, Mississippi .1 |
Death | May 6, 1867 | Peter died May 6, 1867 in Monroe County, Mississippi at age 30.1 |
Note | | The Chickasaw County, Mississippi courthouse records were destroyed during the Civil War, therefore Peter and Bettie's marriage record of 1860 burned. Peter died before 1870 census. So all trace of him and his descendants was lost until an old family Bible in the possession of Lillian (Boggan) Cowie was copied. She sent the old data from this Bible to Joel T. Howell at Atlanta, Georgia as he was working on the Boggan family tree. Meanwhile, I had corresponded with mr. Howell in regard to a possible Wade connection. When he received the Family Bible Data, he immediately sent it to me as he felt it was my missing Peter E. Wade. The birth dates recorded, came from the Boggan Bible. The death dates came from the Julian King Bible. There is no doubt that this Peter E. Wade is one and the same. In the 1850 census Tippah County, Mississippi, Peter is living with his parents; in the 1860 census Chickasaw County, Mississippi he is living as a bachelor in the Palo Alto community, not too far from the Hudson family.
Peter E. Wade served in the Civil War, enlisted May 8, 1862 with Company F, 43rd Regiment Mississippi Volunteers, C.S.A. and was discharged August 7, 1862 for health reasons, this probably attributed to his early death.
