Note-Shackelford | Patrick Henry Roberts Sr Patrick Roberts was born in Baltimore, was educated there, took up thelaw, and served as a private during the Revolutionary war. He cast hisvote for Washington, then for Jefferson and in religion was a Protestant, probably the first in the family of previously the Catholic religion, andhe also belonged to the Masonic Order. He came across the Alleganies toKentucky about i8ii, and laid his land warrant on about one thousandacres of land along the Big Benson River near Frankfort. He engaged inthe practice of his profession at Lexington, where he was known as the“Cobbler of Benson” because of his pride and the autocratic bearing whichcharacterized his personal action. In addressing the jury, he marked timeall over the court room. He won his last case at the age of ninety-five,and fell dead in the arms of his son from the saddle of his old ponySilver Heels at his home gate. He was the father of twenty-threechildren. One son, Edmund A. W. Roberts, still lives at the age ofninety-eight on the old Benson homestead. Patrick Roberts was twicemarried. His first wife was Margaret Mastin, of Holland Dutch stock and awoman of noted courage. The second wife was Mary Austin, whom he marriedin Kentucky. He was born on 6 March 1756 in England, but fought for the colonists during the Revolutionary War. Each summer Henry's descendants hold a reunion in Franklin County, Kentucky at the Roberts Schoolhouse, which was built on land once owned by Henry. This year's reunion will be held on Sunday, July 30. Here are some details on Henry's family to help you determine if he is your ancestor. The name of his first wife and the date and place of their marriage are unknown. Their children were William (who moved to Wisconsin) Thomas H. Mary (who married Daniel Connell) Emanuel John Elizabeth (who married Jeremiah Williams). Henry's second wife was Catherine Austin (daughter of Moses Austin). They married in June 1810 in Baltimore Maryland. Their children were Caroline (who married John W. Henry died there 23 May 1839. If you're interested in attending, let me know and I'll provide directions and more details as I get them. I have descendants of most of the children, too, in case that will help you. Oh, I'm a descendant of Patrick Roberts and Martha Ann Armstrong.
