L. W. DEMAREE, merchant, is a native of Shelby County, Ky., and a son of
R. H. and Eliza J. (Tharp) Demaree. The father, also a native of Shelby
County, is a son of John A. and Sarah (Hastings) Demaree, the former a
native of Mercer County. Mrs. Eilza (Tharp) Demaree was born in Shelby
County, Ky., daughter of Lee and Susan (Clark) Tharp. John A. Demaree
was a native of Mercer County, Ky. The business which our subject now
owns was founded in 1848 by his uncle, Lewis B. Demaree, in a room
14x16 feet, on a capital of $40. He was succeeded by John W. Demaree in
1860, who managed and owned it until his death. The business constantly
increased and amounted to over $20,000 in 1886. Our subject had clerked
for a number of years for his uncle, and on the death of the latter, took
charge of the business, and still successfully conducts it. R. H. Demaree
taught school for a number of years in Shelby County, but now assists in
the store. His wife, Mrs. Eliza J. Demaree, died in 1870, a member of
the Methodist Church. They were parents of two children: our subject and
Mattie A. He next married Mildred F. Hall, of Henry County, Ky. and one
child, Sallie M., has been born to them. Our subject is a member of the
Methodist Episcopal Church South. He is now in the prime of life, and
highly esteemed by a host of friends. He is yet unmarried.
