A letter is reproduced that was written by the citizens of Smithville and published in the Liberty Tribune. Samuel Shackelford led his brother William and friend John W. Callaway into town. Some men of importance in Smithville had branded them thieves and outlaws and told them they had better move out of the area. Refusing to be run out, they rode into town and confronted their accusers. Intemperate words were followed by a gun fight between Sam and Wm. Ross, John W. Douglass, and M. Imhoff. Wm . Shackelford wrestled Douglass's knife and pistol away from him, inflicting several wounds in the process that resulted in Douglass's death. Wm. then tried to fend off M. Imhoff by firing two or three shots in his direction. (M. Imhoff was not hit.) A number of men jumped into the fray, attacking Sam from all sides, who managed to stab and mortally wound S. J. Ross, and also stabbed Ira Witt. John W. Callaway then began to fire at the mob.
