| Note-Shackelford | He Below is an abstract of the Will of Richard Shackelford: He left to his son William, the home tract of land with the understandingthat if he, the son William had children, he could dispose of the saidland to his children; but if he had no children then it was to be for theuse of this widow until she married again, after which she was to havebut one third of the property. He, Richard, left a tract of land to his son Zachariah, but if Zachariahdied without heirs then his land was to go to his own -- Richard's owntwo daughters -- Elizabeth and Frances. He also left to his son William, five slaves and his, (Richard's) silverhilted sword and pistols. And William had already received sixty pounds, which was to be deducted from his share of estate. Zachariah was not 21 years of age, and the land originally intended forhim was in Essex Co., but had been sold. So he was to have the money fromthe sale of said land, to be paid to him by William, when Zachariah wastwenty one years old. The daughter Elizabeth was given 80 pounds. The daughter Frances had already secured her share of the inheritance. A son Roger had already been provided for, but was to have additionalcattle that was listed in the will. The above will was dated September 19, 1773, and probated October 11,1773. King & Queen Co., Va. Text: Virginia Colonial Abstracts and Land Causes, page 82 Source: Shackelford Clan Magazine -- 2 (274) - http://members.tripod.com/~wvgal/clan4-12.htm PSH --------------- Law suit of Thornton and wife vs Taliaferro, dated 1807, 'FredericksburgHustings Court, Bundle #259 shows evidence of more children of Richard's. We also find that there was a Richard, Jr., who was not named earlier. And by this suit we also learn that there was a son Frederick, who alongwith his -- 3 (375) -- brother William had been an executor of Richard'swill. We also find that at this time Zachariah had died and John Bairdhad been the administrator of this estate There was a law-suit that was misunderstood 8 (676) by the fact thatRichard Shackelford had been named executor of the estate of PhillipRootes, and he had accepted the appointment, and then died before thefinal settlement. So therefore, a lawsuit between the Phillip Rootesheirs and the Shackelford heirs for a final settlement. There does notappear to have been any relationship whatever. Shackelford Clan Magazine.1 | |

Reference - The Shackelford Family, by Col Robert B. Shackelford, page 7. On this same list of eight persons was Mary Palmer, sister to Edward. Andit is thought that she became the wife of Roger. | Note-Shackelford | Francis Shackelford Essex County, Virginia, deed records show that Francis Shackelford, ofSouth Farnham Parish, sold 150 acres of land to John Shackelford, ofPetsworth Parish, in 1706, and then another record the same year empowersZachary Lewis to appear for me at the Essex County Court House torelinquish dower in the said 150 acres, my husband Francis Shackelfordsold to John Shackelford, and you will oblige your loving sister. Signed Sarah X (mark) Shackelford. Thus we see that the wife of Francis Shackelford was Sarah Lewis, sisterto one Zachary Lewis. --------------------- SHACKELFORDS IN ESSEX COUNTY, VIRGINIA Our records show that the first Shackelfords in Essex County, Va., wereFrancis, John, Henry and Roger. Francis Shackelford appears there asearly as 1700, for we find the following documentary evidence. 'FrancisShackelford, of South Farnham Parish, sold the land where FrancisShackelford then lived, to Charles Smith, containing more than 300 acres, for 80 pounds. Said land part of a patent of 5.1 acres between Pyratawayand Hoskins Swamp and Creek, to Henry Aubrey, March 10, 1677, who sold itto John Fry, who in turn sold it to Edward Sadler, who sold it to FrancisShackelford, Dec. 30, 1700. Both Francis Shackelford and his wife Sarahacknowledged said sale in court Feb. 10, 1708. Francis Shackelford appears on record in Essex Co., many times during thenine years between 1700 and 1709, at which time his name ceases to appearthere. But evidently he moved away before that time, as we find where hiswife Sarah gave power of attorney to her brother Zachariah Lewis, March19, 1703. On March 10, 1707, Francis Shackelford acknowledged a deed to JohnShackelford. Order Book 3, page 333. Then July 9, 1714, we find a mentionof one Roger Shackelford. Order Book 4, page 594. | Note-Shackelford | John Shackelford Those who accept John Shackelford as the immigrant make the claim thatJohn was a 'Knight and Cavalier' of Charles I, when on his arrest, he(John) fled the the (sic) country to save his head. Quoting from page 37,' The Shackelford Family', by Col Robert B. Shackleford, 'Oneauthority'--Minor Gibson, a relative, wrote an account of the family forpublication in the Genealogical Column of the Richmond Times Dispatch, about thirty years ago. And in this account it is stated that the founderof the family in Virginia was John, who settled in King & Queen County,Virginia, in 1649. But this County was not formed until 1691, when it wascut off from New Kent. He further states that it is not known whom he(John) married, but it is supposed to have been in The Colony, late inlife. He is known to have had two sons--John and Benjamin. John marriedthe eldest daughter of John Livingston, of South Carolina, who emigratedfrom Scotland, et cetera'. End of quote. John Shackelford, son of the immigrant Roger, married a Miss Livingstonof South Carolina and acquired large landed interests in King and QueenCounty, Virginia. His descendants numbered many of the most distinguishedto bear the name, including John Shackelford, for many yearsCommonwealth's Attorney for Culpepper, Judge Henry Shackelford ofCulpepper, Judge George Scott Shackelford of Orange, and VirginiusRandolph Shackelford of Orange, late President of the Virginia State BarAssociation.
