State of Carolina, Abbeville District.

In the name of God, Amen:

Know all men by these witnesses that I, Mordecai Shackelford, of Districtand State aforesaid, knowing that ere it be long that I must go the wayof all the earth and wishing to leave my earthly affairs that God hasbeen pleased to give me, as follows:

First: This being my last Will and Testament I leave my son John W.Shackelford and Allen Shackelford, my two executors.

Secondly: I desire to be berid at the deesion (sic) of my two executors.After my funeral expenses be paid I wish that my just debts be paid, andafter that my other affairs be settled as follows: That previous to this,having made a division among all my children, each one having had hispart up to that settlement except Robert Shackelford, he has had onehundred and sixty five dollars more than his part, which is to come outof the balance of his part. Also Wyley Shackelford has had one hundredand fifty dollars more than his part, which is to come out of the balanceof his part. I also desire that fifty dollars be paid to my son ThomasShackelford. The balance of my estate to be divided as follows:

First: I desier that the land whereon I now live be given to my sonThomas Shckelford, for his part, with the exception of one cow, to be hisfinal part of what is now to be divided. The balance to be sold anddivided as shall hereafter be directed.

I desier that John Howard Grant, my grandson, have my sucking colt, andthen have an equal divide of what is to be sold--all the property that Inow possess to be sold except the land I desier that John Grant's partremain in the hands of my two executors till he is twenty one years old,then they shall cause the same to be delivered to him.

My negroes to be sold-namely Peggy, Lewis, Sillar, Nelly, Bedford andaugustus, (sic) with all my stock, household and citchen furniture to bedivided equally to my children--namely John W. Shackelford, RobertShackelford, John H. Grant in the place of Mary McCalster, his mother,which he is to receive in the rume (sic) of her for her final part, AllenShackelford, Howard Shackelford, Wiley Shackelford and StephenShackelford.

I know being in my right mind and memery do acknowledge this to be mylast Will and Testament. In the name of God, Amen. As witness my hand andseal this sixteenth day of September in the year of our Lord, onethousand eight hundred and thirty nine. (September 16, 1839).

I, Sterling Shackelford, of Putnam County, Indiana, being in good generalhealth and of right exercise of mind, make this my last Will andTestament.

First: I desire that my body be decently interred and that my funeral beconducted in a manner corresponding with my estate and situation in life.And as to such worldly estate as it has pleased God to entrust me with Idispose of the same in the following manner, towit;

I direct first that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid assoon after my decease as possible, out of the first monies that shallcome to the hand of my executor, from any portion of my estate. Afterwhich I will that all my remaining personal property go to my belovedwife during her natural life, and at her death to be equally dividedbetween my daughter-Amelia Hardin and my son John W. Shackelford; andthat all the real estate of which I shall die seized of or possessed ofshall be divided as follows: towit: My two sons Thomas J. Shackelford andJohn W. Shackelford, shall have the west half of the southwest quarter ofsection twenty seven; also the north half of the east half of thesouthwest quarter of section twenty seven. Also my daughter-Amelia Hardinshall have the south half of the east half of the southwest quarter ofsection twenty seven. All being in township sixteen, north of range threewest.

I also direct that my two sons--Thomas J. Shackelford and John W.Shackelford, pay my son Edmund R. Shackelford, fifty dollars as hisremaining portion of my estate. Also Sarah S. Hardin, John S. Hardin, andJames A. Hardin, my grand children, one hundred and twenty dollars eachat the age of twenty one years. Also George W. Shackelford, my grandson,one hundred dollars at the age of twenty one.

I also will the legacy coming to me in Kentucky, to Thomas J. Shackelfordand John W. Shackelford, to redeem the east half of the southwest quarterof section twenty seven, (the above described lands) from under mortgage.And I hereby make and ordain my two sons Thomas J. Shackelford and JohnW. Shackelford, executors of this my last Will and Testament. In witnesswhereof I, Sterling Shackelford, the testator, have hereunto set my handand seal the twenty seventh of June eighteen hundred and fifty. (June 27,1850).

CODICIL TO ABOVE WILL

My grandson-James A. Hardin, having deceased since this my last Will wasmade, I now direct that Thomas J. Shackelford and John W. Shackelford payover to Edmund R. Shackelford, after my decease, and after my belovedwife's decease, the one hundred and twenty dollars set apart to my abovenamed grandson.

Sterling Shackelford was born in Virginia, and was a son of John and AnnShackelford, who died in Shelby County, Ky. (See Shackelford ClanMagazine for November 1947).1

Will of Milly Shackelford.

In the name of God, Amen: I, Milly Shackelford, of the County ofBuchannon, and State of Missouri, being of sound mind and memory, andconsidering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life, dotherefore make, ordain, publish and declare this to be my last Will andTestament. That is to say:

1st: After all my lawful debts are paid and discharged, the residue of myestate, personal and real I give and bequeath and dispose of as follows:

I bequeath to the two children of Mrs S.J. Demmit, William and SusannahDemmit, the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars. The aforesaid amountbeing now in the hands of John Calhoun. This sum to be equally dividedbetween them, and to be under the entire control and management of theirmother, until they attain the age of twenty one years. Should they diethe money shall be for the use and benefit of their mother.

My cow, I give to Mrs Sarah J. Demmit.

I desire that my negro woman Malinda, now in Kentucky, shall be sold tosome good human master of her own selection, and the money arising fromthe said sale be given to the said Malinda, for her use and benefit.

To the following negroes--Austin, Tom and Lucy, I direct my Executor togive to each one of them a sum of twenty dollars. Also to my girl Sarah,five dollars; and to Peter, Judge and Caroline, I give five dollars each.

To my negro boy Richmond, when his hire shall be collected, I desire thathe shall have twenty dollars of said money.

After all my debts are paid, whatever amount of money there may be left,I bequeath to my nephew Dr James Hewlett; also my bed and bed clothes andtable spoons.

My horse, I desire to be sold, and the proceeds arising from the sale tobe appropriated to the erection of a suitable super structure above andaround my grave.

Likewise, I make, constitute and appoint William Hewlett, Executor ofthis my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all former Wills by memade.

In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed myseal, this the eighth day of December eighteen hundred and fifty seven.(December 8th, 1857)
