America White Sloan
Wittness: Victor Smith & William S. Young ------------------------------------ Obituary of America White Shackelford-Sloan
'Death at ninety-one years: 1811-1902: Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, ather home on North Main Street, occurred the death of Mrs. America WhiteShackelford-Sloan, after an illness of almost eight months duration.
Mrs. Sloan was born in Shelby County, Kentucky on December 15, 1811. Shewas married to Harvey Sloan in 1831, and this union was blessed with ahappy life of almost half a century, Mr Sloan dying October 13, 1874. In1835 with her husband she left her girlhood home and came to Franklin. They located on the lot at the southwest corner of North Main and WestMadison streets and had lived there continously since that time. Mr Sloanpurchased nearly all the ground lying between Main Street and the BigFour railway and as far south as Jefferson Street. The old homestead waspurchased from George King, who in turn purchased it direct from thegovernment, and it is without doubt the only lot in Franklin that haschanged ownership but once. Here eleven children were born and of thisnumber but four survive the parents. They are James W. Sloan and Mrs. E.J. Overbay of this city, Charles Sloan of Indianapolis, and John C. Sloanof Worthington.
Mrs. Sloan, or 'Grandma Sloan' as she was affectionately called, has beena constant sufferer since March 1st, but through this long illness shehas been kind and patient. Her physician, Dr. P.W. Payne, in speaking ofher, said her memory was remarkable for one her age. She was posted onall subjects of general interest and was a most entertainingconversationalist. Of her truly it can be said 'that to know was to love'and her friends were numbered amongst both young and old.
As the church bells were calling the people to morning worship she wasaroused by the sound and realized their meaning with pleasure. A lightseemed to break in upon her and while she was bidding her loved onesfarewell the end which she had long expected but never feared, came.
The funeral will be held from the home Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Dr. L.P. Marshall of the Presbyterian church, of whichcongreration she was a life long member. The burial will be under thedirection of E.G. Barnhizer, In Greenlawn.'
