Biography Patrick came to Warren co., IL about 1833. he received his education at Galesburg and later at Bethany college, WV. It was in West Virginia that he met Louisa Encell. They were married by Alexander Campbell, the founder of the Disciples of Christ (Christian) Church. They came to Warren Co., IL to make their home and in 1852 went to Abingdon. In 1853, Patrick Haley Murphy and John C. Reynolds opened an academy in Abingdon. The school continued through 1854. Abingdon College opened Sep 1, 1855 with P. H. Murphy as President. He held this office until his death, which was caused by consumption. His cousin, J.W. Butler, succeeded him. Abingdon College combined with Eureka College at Eureka, IL in 1885.

Patrick preached at Coldbrook, Meridan, and Abingdon Christian Churches as an evangelist and held meetings in Quincy, Macomb, and other places. His tombstone reads: 'P.H. Murphy, our President, a faithful minister in the Lord.2
