Biography | | Educated in the log schoolhouse near Broughton.
Was a teacher for 3 terms. Apparently got the gold fever & spent 4 years in Virginia City, MT after making a 112-day overland trek by ox team with 8 others. He then boarded a steamer at the headwaters of the Missouri River, which landed at St. Louis 21 days later. Joined the Masons in 1869. Was a Democrat and first voted for Tilden.
After 2 years farming at home spent 4 years in merchandise at Walpole. He was listed in the Mercantile Agency Reference Book for Illinois in 1875 as running a general store called Gott & Douglas in Walpole that was worth about $2000. He then spent a few months in California but returned to merchandising in Hamilton County until 1885. Worked just as a farmer afterwards, owning 130 acres of land.
