After 2 years farming at home spent 4 years in merchandise at Walpole. He was listed in the Mercantile Agency Reference Book for Illinois in 1875 as running a general store called Gott & Douglas in Walpole that was worth about $2000. He then spent a few months in California but returned to merchandising in Hamilton County until 1885. Worked just as a farmer afterwards, owning 130 acres of land. Charter member of the Tuscan Lodge 630, AF & AM of Walpole. 5 grandchildren living in 1927.1 | |
