Moved to Whiting Indiana from Iowa. He named Ralph and Ray after two ofhis friends who were flyers and boxers. Ralph Parcaute was WilliamRalph's namesake. Grandpa Glen worked in the car shop at SinclairRefinery, riveting, repair on tanks, piping inside of cars. It was hotdirty work and much different from the farm in Iowa.
When Ruby was pregnant with Ralph, she went home to Iowa to be with hermother. Glen missed her so much that he quit his job when Sinclair andwent home to Iowa. After Ralph was born they came back and he went backto Sinclair. When Ruby was pregnant with Ray, the same situationoccurred. This is why Ralph and Ray were born in Iowa and Robert and Jimwere born in Hammond Indiana.1 |

Was pregnant in Whiting but went home to have Ralph and Ray. Lived on Torrance Avenue in Hammond. Hickory Street North as you could get in an apartment on the second floor.
When I was a little girl, I remember grandma taking me to Michigan and spending nights at her house. She would cut out paper dolls for me from catalogs and we would spend hours playing with them. When I was a little older, Barbie dolls came into fashion. She bought me a patent leather case and filled it full of Barbie clothes that she had sewn for me. I had the most beautiful collection of Barbie clothes because of her.
I always saw a round wooden mirror on her bed stand. I asked her one day where it came from and she told me that grandpa Glen had bought for her on their first wedding anniversary. I have that mirror on my bedroom dresser.
Grandma was always cooking. I remember on Christmas Eve, she would make dough for cinnamon rolls. She would place them on a cookie sheet in the shape of a Christmas tree. She would get up early on Christmas morning and pop them in the oven and when we would come over to open presents, we all had fresh baked cinnamon rolls and her house smelled so wonderful. She taught me how to make homemade noodles and Waldorf salad.

A few years later Uncle Ray had a stroke. I cried for weeks. He was neverthe same but you could see that he tried to keep his sense of humor. Myaunt had a Christmas party for the McMahan clan the year before he died.It was 5 weeks after my open heart surgery and he came up to me and triedto pull my shirt to see my scar! He had a twinke in his eye and I couldsee that he was trying to cheer me up.1 |
