Birth of Daughter | after 1795 | His daughter (given was born after 1795.1 |
Death | 1797 | James died 1797 in Newberry County, South Carolina. He left a widow, Jane.1 |
Note | | With regard to the children of James Vardaman: The DAR application of Mrs. Lottie Mae Soutar Nichols of Rosedale, MS, dated 19 May, 1971, states that her great-grandmother, Rachel Vardaman Soutar, was the 6th of 7 children of James Vardaman and that Rachel's mother was Jane (Jean) Johnson. It further contains a notation that Rachel was 19 in 1815.
It is believed that James Vardaman was married, first, to Sabra (sic) Lyles (Liles), daughter of Williamson Lyles (Liles), originally from Virginia but, later, of Lyles Ford on the Broad River, 96 District, SC, and that she is the mother of the three sons of James Vardaman. Further, it is believed that she died after giving birth to the third son (Joseph) of James Vardaman, and that he then married Jane (Jean) Johnson, daughter of Daniel Johnson and Ann Anderson of 96 District, SC. This family originally may have come from Cecil County, Maryland.
It is possible that Sabra Lyles Vardaman could have been the mother of only the first two boys and Jane (Jean)January Johnson the mother of the third son; however, I do not believe that this is the case. The earliest known date of reference for Jane Johnson being the wife of James Vardaman is the will of her father, Daniel Johnson, dated January 8, 1783.
The only known record of Sabra Lyles being married to a Vardaman is the will of her father, Williamson Lyles, dated October 1, 1794, in Newberry County, SC, in which he leaves 4 negroes to the children of his daughters, Lucy Goree, Sabra Vardaman and Drucilla Dawkins. It can be assumed from the way that this will reads that the 3 daughters are deceased, otherwise he would be leaving his property to them rather than to their children. The only known Vardaman male in South Carolina during this era, other than old William, is his son, James.
Further, the oldest son of Thomas Vardaman was named Edwy Lyles Vardaman. Edwy would have been a grandson of James Vardaman and, assuming that Sabra Lyles was the first wife of James and mother of Thomas, her grandson, also. It may be significant that the family name of Johnson is not carried forward, even once, in any of the descendants of James Vardaman's three sons.1 |
(heir) Will | February 24, 1783 | James Vardeman was named as an heir in William Vardeman I's will on February 24, 1783 in Newberry County, South Carolina.3,1,4 |
Emigration | about 1790 | He emigrated from to Wilkes County, Georgia, about 1790.5 |

- [S3090] , Jack Vardaman Family Tree: Family Tree Maker File, received June 18, 2004, Many years ago, Thomas Vardaman's birth year was furnished to me as 1777 by another Vardaman family researcher who is now deceased. This year has never been confirmed and the source of my correspondent's information is unknown. The 1850 census shows him as age 69 which would translate to a birth year of 1780/1781.
However, this same census shows his wife Annie's age to be 59, which would translate to a birth year of 1790/1791. Since we know her birthdate to be Oct. 19, 1786, she would have been 64 years old in October of 1850 when the 1850 census was taken.
Since the 1850 census has misstated Annie's age by 5 years, it is likely that Thomas' age on that census is also misstated. Prior census records show Thomas as being in the 40 under 50 age category in 1830 and 50 under 60 category in 1840. Both of these censuses suggest that Thomas was probably born no earlier than 1779, which would be compatible with the 1850 census.
In any event, until further, more definitive, information becomes available, I will accept the 1777 birthdate as the more acceptable date for Thomas' birth.

Biography | May, 1891 | SEMI-WEEKLY INTERIOR JOURNAL, STANFORD, KENTUCKY, FRIDAY, MAY 8, 1891 John Trousdale Vardeman was born on March 13, 1800, and is consequently 91 years old and nearly two months. He now lives at the same place he was born and has lived there continuously all his life, with the exception of a few years after the death of his father, when he made his home with his brother, Jeremiah, who lived near by and who moved to Texas. John went with him, but remaining only a few years, returned to make his home with Richard Portman, who married his niece, the daughter of Jeremiah, and lived near Middleburg, Casey county, until the death of Samuel Holmes, who married his youngest sister, when he felt it his duty to go live with her. There he continues to live to the present time at the old homestead. He is a hale, lively old gentleman, enjoying life remarkably well for his age. He never married, though in early manhood was a great ladies man and favorite in young company. He was not avaracious, though industrious. After his negroes were freed he contented himself breeding and rearing a few fine roadsters and saddle horses, which he occasionally sells and which renders him independent financially. His long life is a great comfort to his nephew, who also has no family. John Trousdale was the fourth child born to Morgan and Polly Trousdale Vardeman. Morgan lived to be 82 years old, his father, whose name was John, lived considerably over 100. He rode from this county on horseback to what was then called the Natchez country, now West Tennessee, or Northern Mississippi, to visit a son living in that country. Tradition has it that his father, whose name was John also, lived to over 120 years.3 |
Obituary | September 29, 1891 | An obituary for John Trousdale Vardeman appeared on September 29, 1891. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1891 A long life ended last Saturday night when the subject of this notice breathed his last. Mr. Vardeman, who lived with John Holmes, on the same place he was born and on which he always lived, was found dead in bed Sunday morning. He retired apparently in his usual health and in the night got up for a drink of water. Next morning when he did not get up at his usual time, some one went to his bed to find him stiff in death. The funeral was preached by Rev. W.T.B. White, Sunday afternoon and in a few steps from where he saw the light, March 13, 1800, the body of John Vardeman was consigned to the earth that gave it.3 |
