In a book about the Utleys by Joan Brink, she quotes part of a letter written by Cornelia Norris to Charles H. Utley in 1933: 'I have every proof of Wm Utley Sr coming to NC directly from Virginia, [likely Goochland County] together with Sanders, Turners & others, all settling in the same neighborhood, away back in 1745-50. So Wm Sr. of NC and John who md Miss Lewis and lived and died in Goochland Co., VA cut from Henrico Co, were John Utley's sons of Henrico, he living on north side of James River. There was a Jacob Utley also in Virginia who went into Orange Co. about right age to have been brother of Wm of NC and John of VA.'

First record for William Utley (found by Frances Cullom Harper) is in 1744 in Northampton County.
From 'The Utley family in America: ancestors and descendants of Gabriel Marion Utley of Utah.' William Utley was born in Virginia - North Carolina area, and about 1740 moved to land about 15 miles from Raleigh, North Carolina. He married, had a family, and served in the Revolutionary War. Samuel Walton Utley (1799-1852), a direct descendant in the fourth generation, moved from Wake County, North Carolina to Perry County, Alabama, and married Maria Berry in 1829. They became Mormon converts in 1845, and moved to Winter Quarters in 1847. The only two children surviving, Harriet Utley and Gabriel Marion Utley (1844-1929). Harriet married William Carter in 1853, and Gabriel moved to Pine Valley near St. George in 1871, where he married Sophia Minerva Burgess in 1872. They were called to help develop Mesquite, Nevada, and later returned to Utah, living in Washington County, Sevier County, Millard County, and finally back to Sevier County for their final homestead in 1896.
