Richard D Houghton SIR LOIN
While Richard Plantagenet is revered as one of the great warrior kings ofEngland, he is perhaps known best know as the 'absent king'. Due to thefact that during his reign from 1189-1199, he spent a total of six monthsin England. King Richard I is better know as Richard I Coeur de Lion, orRichard the Lionheart. He is memorialized in such stories as Robinhoodand Sir Walter Scott's, 'Ivanhoe'. Though he was a great warrior, asshown in his involvement in the Crusades, he was also a well-knowndrinker. Upon departure from the Crusades Richard I hit torrentialweather in the North of England. He proceeded to stop at the HoughtonTower in Lancashire. The D'Houghtons were a predominant and wealthyfamily of Norman decent dating from 1066, and were glad to host Richard'sarrival. Richard I was treated to the D'Houghton's best meal a tender cutof beef. They all ate and got drunk, as Richard often did. Uponcompletion Richard was so pleased with the meal and the hospitality thathe unsheathed his sword and knighted the loin of beef, 'Sir Loin'. Hencethe contemporary cut of sirloin steak.¹
