Note that John D. Martin married late in life, i.e., he was approximately 38 years old when he married Elizabeth Gilliland who could not have been over 14 years old at the time of this marriage. Of course, John could have been married previously; however, since the only children on the 1850 census were all born after his marriage to Elizabeth, it appears that this was probably his first marriage.
I have also noted that his name on the 1850 census is very plainly shown as "Joshua" D. rather than John D. Since he appears in the 1860 and 1870 censuses as John D. and J. D. respectively, and he married as John D., I can only assume that the census taker made an error in recording his name in 1850.
It has been very tempting to assume that this John D. and a John R. Martin (who also named a son "Asa T."), also in Coosa County in 1840, 1850 and 1860, were brothers. However, it is very, very unlikely that their parents would have given two sons born within two years of each other the same first name. As a result I do not currently believe that these two men were brothers. On the other hand, if the 1850 census is actually correct and Joshua D. Martin decided , for reasons unknown, to be called John instead of Joshua, then the two men could very well be brothers. (See the notes for John D.'s son Asa T. for more information on the John R. Martin family).1 |
