Long is the man that both Mary Elizabeth and Charles W. Tindallwere living with in Johnson Co, Indiana in 1860. On that census record Mary is listed as a domestic, which according to a genealogy dictionary meant she was a female relative living and helping in the household. ------------------- Deed-Shelby Co.,Ky. 1859 This Indenture made this 11th day of July 1859 between Aaron Long of the County of Shelby and State of Kentucky of the one part and William M. Tindall, John M. Tindall, Samuel P. Tindall, Aaron F. Tindall, Mary E. Tindall, Charles W. Tindall and Zachariah G. Tindall, children and heirs of Samuel P. Tindall deceased of the other part. The record above references a sale of land between Aaron Long and Samuel P. Tindall made 31 October 1840. Evidently Aaron Long is claiming the land sold to him some nineteen years earlier. The end result is that the heirs living on that land are then separated and end up living with various members of the extended family. Mary and Charles end up with Nelson Long, and Zachariah G. ends up with a man named Monroe Tindall, whom I believe is Charles M. Tindall. From this point forward Charles and Mary seem to follow each other around central Indiana until 1882. Source for all above: Jason T. Tindall),to cousin, Tom Ward,( g-grandson of Mary Elizabeth Tindall Ward) to PSH.April 2005 ------------------------------------------ Re: Ephriam Tolbert Ward Newspaper clipping from 1903--The Canon City Record, Canon City, Colorado E.T. Ward left Canon City about the 24th of July on a hunting trip up at Black Mountain and returned August 3rd with five large bear skins as trophies of his hunt. He killed five bears, several wolves, skunks and other small animals. These animals were all killed within forty miles of Canon City. Black Mountain is on the Fairplay road, and his hunting was done in the vicinity of 31-mile ranch, and Elk mountain. When he first got up there he was told that there were some deer ranging on a certain mountain. While it was not the season for killing deer he thought he would try and get a sight on them. He climbed the mountain at great exertion. Mr. Ward is an aged man, being close to 70 years of age and in ill health, he could travel only a few rods when he would become exhausted and have to sit down and rest. He finally came in sight of some deer, and as he was looking at them a large bear crossed a trail between him and the deer at a very rapid pace. As the bear swung around to his right, Ward made a straight cut to intercept him, and when he came in sight of the bear he was about 400 yards distant. He took a shot at him, as he ran, not much expecting to hit him. Immediately after the shot the bear turned and made directly for him. He made two-more shots at the bear, the last one was made when the bear was only about 25 feet away and coming full speed at him. Fortunately for Ward that shot laid the bear low. Examination showed that the first shot had gone through the bear in front of his hips breaking one rib on one side and two ribs on the other side. Being thus badly wounded the bear had made a desperate attempt to get the man who had shot him. Mr. Ward used a 30-30 rifle and smokeless powder. He says he wouldn't use ordinary black powder, for wben he shoots at a bear he wants to see whether the bear is coming for him or not and don't want his vision obscured by smoke. Mr. Ward says that Mr. Pigg, of Currant Creek, recently caught in a trap a mountain lion which measured 9 feet from tip to tip. the killing of these animals is a great benefit to the stockmen in that vicinity, for they kill many calves. Scarcely anyone would I suppose that so many large animals could be killed in one trip within such a short distance of Canon. Mr. Ward is an old hunter and knows how to do It in spite of his advanced years and ill health. He came to Colorado for his health two years ago, and is at present making his headquarters at the canning factory. Above story submitted by Tom Ward, gg-grandson, via email May 2006 / PsH.1 |
