He was educated at CentralUniversity, from which institution he received the degree of Bachelor of Arts June, 1887, and that of Master of Arts in 1888. He taught school for twoyears, after which he attended the law school of the University of Virginia. He was admitted to the Richmond bar January, 1891, where he practiced law until he qualified as Judge of Madison County, January 3, 1910. He was reelected and qualified, January, 1914. Judge Shackelford is in theprime of life. Qualified by birth, education and training for a career ofgreat usefulness, his friends confidently expect other and higher honors tocome to him. He married his cousin, Miss Annie Louise Clay, daughter of Hon. Cassius M. Clay, of Bourbon County, and their home is one marked by simplicity and hospitality. Judge Shackelford received all the degrees of York Rite Masonry inthe local bodies. He was made a Master Mason February 12, 1901, and the same year was exalted a Royal Arch Mason. He was elected Master of his Lodge December, 1903. He was elected High Priest of his Chapter firstSeptember, 1901, and has been reelected four times, having served oftener in that position than any Companion in the history of the local Chapter with two exceptions. He was elected Grand High Priest of the Grand ChapterOctober, 1914. He was Knighted in Richmond Commandery April, 1901, and became Commander April, 1905. In Masonic positions as in all others entrustedto him, he has been found faithful in the discharge of his duties.
