Report from the Secretary of War, Washington, 1835 Obadiah Wade was a private in the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War. Although his birthdate was 15 April 1764, he was described as aged 71 on 28 January 1833, when, as a resident of Barren County, Kentucky, he received an annual pension of $60.00 for his service.
Abstract of Revolutionary War Pension Files, (Page 3628-3630, 3634) Obadiah Wade, Virginia Line, S16570, soldier lived in Goochland County, Virginia but enlisted at Richmond, Virginia, he applied 18 September 1832, Barren County, Kentucky, aged 68 years 5 months.
Received the following from Carolyn: Circuit Court lawsuit Obadiah vs. Estate of Thomas Wade It appears that Obadiah's son, Thomas died prior to his father which lead to a suit regarding Obadiah's first will in which he inherited property. Since he died before his father the property should not have come to him. It is a very long legally drown out record, but it does give an idea of who Obadiah's chirldren and grandchildren were. All grandchildren mentioned are listed as being "not of age." Thomas W. Wade - son (deceased) Nancy Wade and Cynthia Wade - Thomas' daughters Henry G. Barren County, Kentucky, Will Book 3, Page 160 I OBADIAH WADE of Barren County and State of Kentucky do hereby make and ordain this to be my last will and testament hereby revoking every will by me at any time heretofore made. First it is my will and desire that all the estate of every kind of which I may die possessed be held and enjoyed forever by my son FIELDING T. WADE to him and his heirs forever. Secondly. It is my will that my executor hereinafter names in case the suit I have now depending in the Barren circuit court against the executor of my son THOMAS W. WADE shall not be decided before my death, suit it to a final termination and in case the same be successfully determined it is my will that the property now in controversy in that suit be equally divided amongst my surviving children and their descendants as it would pass by the statute of distribution of the state, and the first claim is be combined in that case to apply to the other property I have not named in said deed of gift to THOMAS W. WADE or which I have accumulated since the date of said deed of gift now in contest. Thirdly. It is my will that the negro woman Nooney now in my possession, if she survives me be free at my decease and that my executor give her on heifer calf or cow out of my stock, two coverlids (blue) and ten dollars in money and be taken care of as long as she lives by my son FIELDING T. WADE or someone that he may appoint for the purpose. I appoint FIELDING T. WADE my only surviving son and child executor to this my last will and testament and request that he be permitted to qualify as such without giving any security in the court. James and Lucy sold their plantation on the waters of Turkey Creek in 1798 and went to Barren County, Kentucky where they purchased a 450 acre tract on Beaver Creek. It was here that James J. and Lucy Wade Mentlo lived out their lives and reared their seven children.
James and Lucy were considered wealthy for their time. The tax records reveal that in 1823 James and Lucy had a tobacco plantation with a total value of $12,375 including the ownership of twenty slaves. As their children attained their majority they were given a portion of the family holdings. The Inventory and Settlement records of Barren County show that his estate totalled $5,768.20 after the sale of his real and personal property.1 |
