Burial | | His body was buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana.1 |
Note | | Statement given by witness to accident which killed John McGrew: January 11, 1947 My name is Lester Preston, age 42, and reside at 2124 North Buckeye Street, Kokomo, Indiana. I am the owner of a 1936 Ford Tudor with license number 677508 Indiana 1946. On the morning of November 25, 1946 I was on my way to work at the Midwestern Auto Company at the corner of Elm and Locke Streets, I reported for work at 7:00 AM. At about 6:15 AM I was enroute South on Washington Street in Kokomo driving the above described automobile. Paul Hinkle of 2211 North Buckeye was riding with me and he was sitting on the right front seat. There is a traffic light at the intersection of North Street and Washington Street; I made the green light at this traffic signal and went on through proceeding South on Washington. I noticed a car behind me that had to stop for the red light; the traffic light having changed from green to red as I was going through the intersection. At this time of the morning it was dark and there was a light drizzle falling. Washinton Street was wet, but not slippery. When I was about 1 1/2 city blocks South of the intersection at North and Washington Streets I saw a man crossing Elm Street from South to north. This man stopped at the North West corner of the intersection of Elm and Washington Streets and looked for traffic. The traffic was clear enough for him to cross Washington street and so he started across Washington from West to East when this man started across the street he had plenty of time to get across Washington Street in front of my car. When this man got to the middle ofWashington Street he stopped and then he started running toward the North East corner of this intersection. About this time I saw a car coming around me - passing on the East side of the North bound lane of Washington Street heading South. I believe this car that passed me was the same car that stopped behind me at the intersection of North and Washington. I thought that the man I saw running had reached the curb and it looked to me as if the man were about to the gutter along the East side of Washington Street when the car that was passing shut off my vision. I heard the passing car strike the man. This car slowed down, went on across Elm Street and swerved out to the center of Washington Street and then back to the East side of the street and stopped beside the first pedestal lamp post South of the intersection. After this car slowed down I pulled up far enough that I could see the man fall off the left side of the other car and he then rolled over two or three times and landed at the South East corner of the intersection with his head upon the curbstone and his feet out into the street. I was driving between 35 and 40 miles per hour (or about that speed) when the car that struck the man passed me. One reason why I believe that the car that struck the man was the same car that had to stop back of me for the traffic light at North and Washington streets is because there were no other cars around. I saw just our two cars along Washington Street. After I heard the other car strike the man I stopped my car at the South West corner of the intersection and went to the man who had been hit. I could see that he was dead. I later learned that this man was John H. McGrew of 1025 North Armstrong Street, Kokomo, Indiana. The driver of the other car who I learned was Ted Sixbey of RR 4 Logansport, Indiana ran back to McGrew and lifted up his head and shoulders. He was very nervous and asked me to call the ambulance, first aid or police. I saw there was nothing I could do; so I left the scene and returned about fifteen minutes later. At that time I heard Sixbey tell the police that he did not see McGrew until he struck him. I also heard Sixbey say that he was going to Muncie at that time - that he worked there. When I first stopped at the scene immediately after the accident there were no other cars in sight either along Washington or Elm to the best of my knowledge. The only persons that I saw at the scene of the accident at that time were Sixbey and the people living on the South East corner of that intersection. I have read the foregoing three pages and they are all true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief.1 |
